Defective steering mechanism leads to recall of golf cars

Now that winter's long, cold grip on Minnesota has loosened, many people in the Twin Cities can't wait to get out to a golf course. Many of them will be riding around the links on a powered golf car, but they may want to first check the car's make and model.

Recently, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission announced a recall of several models of golf cars due to an apparent manufacturing defect which can cause an accident. The recall affects several models sold under the brand names E-Z-Go, Cushman and Bad Boy.

According to the CPSC there have been reports of a loose steering wheel nut, which can lead to loss of steering control and an accident. E-Z-Go says it is aware of one accident in which a passenger was injured when the defect caused a car to lose control and go over a curb.

The company has asked all those who own the affected vehicles to immediately stop using them and to contact E-Z-Go or authorized dealers.

Under the law of product liability, there are three main types of product defects: marketing defects, design defects, and manufacturing defects. Design defects are problems that appear at the design stage. Marketing defects apply when the sellers give insufficient warnings or instructions or sell the product for an unsuitable purpose. Manufacturing defects apply when a product may have been properly designed and properly marketed, but some mistake in the manufacturing process has made it unreasonably dangerous.

When Minnesota consumers are injured by defective products, they may be compensated for medical expenses and other damages through a product liability lawsuit. Minnesota attorneys with experience in this complex area of the law can help the injured to understand their rights and how to assess their legal options.
