Usher's son saved from swimming pool drowning

The five-year-old son of pop entertainer Usher narrowly escaped death in a home swimming pool in Atlanta, after being trapped by the suction created by the pool drain. The child was rescued by a contractor working on the home, after the adults supervising the child in the pool were unable to get him out of the pool. The boy was taken to the hospital is appears to have suffered no lasting injury.

This is not always the case, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) used this incident to issue a renewed warning to home pool owners they should have drain covers installed in their pools. The pool drain covers prevent a child from being trapped and suffering serious injuries or being drowned by the drain.

The CPSC reports that 39 children have been drowned or eviscerated by drains in pools from 2008-2012. A federal law now mandates the installation of drain covers in any public pools, but it does not apply to private pools in homes.

The injuries inflicted by these pool drain cases can be horrific, as was demonstrate by the circumstance of Abigail Taylor, who was trapped by a pool drain at the country club's swimming pool in Minneapolis. The force of the drain pulled a large section of her intestines outside her body. She later died due to complications from the injuries.

If you own a pool and it does not have the proper pool drain cover, you can have a cover installed for an estimated $100, a small price to pay to protect children from a horrific death.
