CPSC recalls gas fireplace products made in Lakefield, Minnesota

Minnesotans who use gas fireplaces may want to check which model has been installed. There have been reports of two injuries and nine explosions in connection with gas fireplaces and fireplace parts made by a company in Lakefield.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled nearly 16,000 fireplace products that can allow for gas to accumulate in the burner, causing a risk of explosion. Hussong Manufacturing is the maker of the products, and in particular, you'll want to look out for these names:

  • Stellar Hearth
  • Kozy Heat
  • Ambiance

The defective products were made starting in October 2009 through April 2013, though only units that use a control system called American Flame IPI are part of the recall. The recall applies to products sold in the U.S. and Canada.

A spokesperson for the CPSC pointed out that this recall marks the first for Hussong Manufacturing, but since 1998, at least a dozen product recalls have involved gas fireplace products.

Before this most recent recall, the injuries suffered by consumers were reportedly abrasions. The explosions also caused property damage.

Product manufacturers, distributors and sellers have an obligation to protect consumers from unreasonable risk of injury and death. Unfortunately, mistakes are made in the design, manufacture and testing of products of all kinds. In many cases, injuries resulting from defective products take victims by surprise, leaving them unsure of where to turn. Meanwhile, the injury gets worse, and medical bills pile up.

If you have been injured because of a defective product, don't let your losses go uncompensated.
